Pre-Renovation Checklist: 5 Steps to a Stress-Free Bathroom Renovation

The excitement of a new bathroom can quickly turn into "renovation fatigue" if you aren’t prepared for the chaos of construction. At skön Design Build, we believe the smoothest projects are those that are "pre-solved" before the first sledgehammer swings.

The excitement of a new bathroom can quickly turn into "renovation fatigue" if you aren’t prepared for the chaos of construction. At skön Design Build, we believe the smoothest projects are those that are "pre-solved" before the first sledgehammer swings.

If you are gearing up for a bathroom transformation, use this essential checklist to protect your home and your sanity.

1. Secure Your "Backup" Plan

If you are renovating your only full bathroom, you need a logistical strategy.

  • The "Shift" Schedule: Arrange to use a neighbor’s shower or a local gym.
  • Temporary Essentials: Move your daily toiletries, medications, and hairdryer into a portable caddy to keep in a bedroom or guest room.
  • The Pet Factor: Construction is loud. Consider a "doggy daycare" for the first few days of demolition to keep pets stress-free.

2. Protect Your High-Traffic Zones (A skön standard process)

Construction dust is the "uninvited guest" that tries to visit every room in your house.

  • Path of Protection: Lay down "Ram Board" or heavy-duty floor runners from the front door to the bathroom to protect your carpets and hardwoods.
  • Seal the Vents: Cover your HVAC registers in the work zone to prevent dust from cycling through your entire furnace system.
  • Plastic Barriers: Hang plastic sheeting over the bathroom doorway to contain the debris.

3. Clear the "Blast Zone"

It isn't just the bathroom that needs to be empty.

  • Adjacent Walls: Remove artwork or mirrors from the walls in the hallway or the room directly behind the bathroom. The vibration from demolition can rattle wall hangings loose.
  • Empty the Vanity: Completely clear out your existing cabinets. This is the perfect time to purge expired products!

4. Locate Your Critical Shut-Offs

In the rare event of a plumbing emergency, every second counts.

  • The Main Valve: Ensure you know exactly where your home’s main water shut-off is located and that it isn’t blocked by storage boxes.
  • The Fixture Valves: Test the local shut-offs under your sink and behind the toilet to ensure they actually turn.

5. Confirm Your "First Day" Deliveries

Nothing stalls a timeline like a missing faucet.

  • Inventory Check: At skön Design Build, we recommend having all "rough-in" components (valves, drains, shower pans) on-site 48 hours before work begins.
  • Overage Audit: Verify you have at least 10–15% extra tile to account for cuts and breakage.
